Li Xuan, representing the Chinese EV brand Neta Auto, noted a rising demand for electric vehicles in Ethiopia, attributed to the government’s initiative to reduce the importation of gasoline-powered cars. “Many China-made EV brands are on sale in Ethiopia where the market for EVs booms after the government’s plan to ban importation of gasoline vehicles,” stated Xuan.
Among the exhibiting companies, the Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex presented locally assembled electric minibuses and coaches. The engineering firm’s quality control manager, Ermiyas Dersu, shared that they have observed encouraging demand for their EVs, having sold 216 minibuses within a year. He remarked, “As part of its commitment to promoting electric mobility, the government of Ethiopia has allowed importation of EVs with tax preference while facilitating loans to importers.”
The exhibition also showcased electric bicycles and tricycles, attracting significant attention. Woda Vehicle Manufacturing PLC highlighted its electric tricycle, capable of traveling between 80 and 100 kilometers on a single charge. Marketing officer Michael Mulugeta commented, “This electric tricycle is getting more and more popular in Ethiopia, especially in rural areas and small towns. We have sold more than 500 units in one year across the country.”
Currently, over 100,000 EVs operate on Ethiopian roads, with projections to increase this number to 500,000 within the next decade, aiming to replace 95 percent of fossil fuel-powered vehicles. The government is actively working on expanding EV production and public charging infrastructure while offering incentives for investors in EV after-sales services. Earlier this year, Ethiopia announced a ban on gasoline or diesel vehicle imports to accelerate the transition to electric mobility amid rising global fuel prices.
