The Government of Ghana has allocated a total of GH¢492.5 million to assist victims of recent disasters, which include both tidal waves and dam spillages. Specifically, GH¢200 million is designated for residents displaced by tidal waves in Agavedzi and other communities within the Ketu South Constituency. This announcement was made by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance, during the presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement to Parliament in Accra.
In addition to the aid for tidal wave victims, GH¢292.5 million is earmarked to assist those affected by the spillage from the Akosombo Dam. Reports indicate that the tidal wave disaster has impacted over 300 individuals, resulting in the destruction of 50 homes and significant erosion of approximately 80 kilometers of coastline. President John Mahama has pledged to address coastal defense measures to safeguard vulnerable areas.
The UNICEF report highlights that the Akosombo Dam spillage has displaced around 35,857 individuals, including children. In response to rising water levels, the Volta River Authority released water from the dam to prevent overflowing, which subsequently resulted in flooding in low-lying communities. The North and Central Tongu districts were particularly hard hit by this flooding.
