On March 6, during the early morning hours, Ms. Konanki disappeared from a beach located near the Riu República Hotel. The hotel stated that this incident coincided with a power outage, which prompted numerous guests to head towards the beach.
Dominican President Luis Abinader expressed his concerns regarding the situation. “We are concerned,” he stated at a recent press conference, noting that all government agencies are actively participating in the search. Furthermore, he mentioned reports from the last person with Konanki, indicating that a wave had crashed on them while they were at the beach.
Contrary to some media reports, Civil Defense Director Juan Salas refuted claims that authorities had discovered Konanki’s clothing. He asserted this misinformation in comments to local publication El Nuevo Diario, although he has not responded to further inquiries.
Sudiksha Konanki, originally from India, is a U.S. permanent resident residing in Chantilly, Virginia. Following her disappearance, her parents, Subbarayudu and Sreedevi, traveled to Punta Cana and have requested that the investigation into their daughter’s case be expanded. It has been confirmed that she traveled to the Dominican Republic with five other female university students on March 3.
