A tragic case of child abuse in Papua New Guinea has come to light involving a young girl named Kimberley, whose words, “I don’t want to go, I will be killed,” reflect the terror she faced at the hands of her parents. The parents have since been arrested by Namatanai police and charged with attempted murder. They are currently detained at the Kavieng jail, according to Chief Sergeant Silau Nambulasa of Namatanai Rural Police Station.

Initially, Kimberley faced daily violence from her parents, who recognized as workers in the logging industry. Their heinous actions included encouraging their other children to partake in the abuse, resulting in significant physical injuries such as burns from hot water. This deplorable situation captured public attention, leading to widespread outrage and requests to adopt Kimberley.

The shocking case was brought to the attention of the authorities after police officers followed up on a tip regarding Kimberley’s mistreatment at the logging camp. The situation escalated alarmingly: during a subsequent visit, police documented visible bruises and signs of grievous bodily harm. Notably, Kimberley’s parents had previously been charged with assault but were subsequently fined and returned to their children.

During a police intervention, Kimberley bravely disclosed her horrific experiences, detailing numerous acts of violence she endured. The Family and Sexual Violence officer, with additional police support, took action by arresting the parents and securing Kimberley’s safety. Currently, she is being cared for in a safe house as her parents face serious charges in court. Kimberley had previously been raised by her grandmother until her parents took her back into their custody for employment purposes.

This case illustrates the severe issue of child abuse in Papua New Guinea and highlights the importance of effective intervention by law enforcement. The commendable actions taken by the police to rescue Kimberley reflect a commitment to safeguarding vulnerable children. As legal proceedings against her parents unfold, the community remains hopeful for Kimberley’s recovery and future well-being in a safe environment.
