The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched 100 electric buses to improve public transportation and promote environmental sustainability. Assembled locally, these buses feature advanced technologies and aim to significantly enhance commuting in the city. The Ethiopian government is also focusing on increasing the number of electric vehicles nationwide to reduce reliance on fuel-powered transport.
The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched 100 electric buses in Ethiopia’s capital as part of its initiative to promote electric mobility. This project emphasizes sustainability and aims to modernize public transport in the region.
These electric buses have been assembled by the Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex, with essential components sourced from China. They feature an integrated Intelligent Transportation System and a Fare Collection System, thereby enhancing operational efficiency.
Officially deployed to service the Bus Rapid Transit route, the electric buses provide an improved commuting experience for residents. The Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, asserted that these buses will bolster the public transport network, ensuring zero emissions and a comfortable journey for passengers.
The electric buses will operate in dedicated lanes, facilitating quicker travel for users. This initiative is anticipated to address the public transportation challenges in Addis Ababa, presenting residents with a more efficient and environmentally-friendly commuting alternative.
As per the Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics, the country currently has over 100,000 electric vehicles, with a goal to reach 500,000 within the next decade, shifting 95% of fuel-powered vehicles to electric. To support this transition, the government banned the import of gasoline and diesel vehicles last year due to rising global fuel prices.
The introduction of 100 electric buses in Addis Ababa marks a significant advancement in Ethiopia’s public transportation and commitment to sustainable energy. With features designed for efficiency and reduced environmental impact, these buses not only enhance commute options but also contribute to the country’s ambitious goal of transitioning towards a predominantly electric vehicle fleet within the next decade.
