According to the Xinhuanet report, these buses, assembled locally by Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex using components sourced from China, include advanced technologies such as an Intelligent Transportation System and a Fare Collection System.
The newly introduced electric buses serve as a convenient commuting solution for the citizens along the city’s designated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes. Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, has emphasized that these buses contribute to the urban public transport system and are designed to be eco-friendly, operating with zero emissions while offering substantial passenger capacity.
Minister Sime further highlighted that the buses will utilize dedicated lanes, thereby ensuring quicker travel for users. Moreover, the Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics has stated that there are currently over 100,000 electric vehicles on the nation’s roads, with ambitious plans to raise that number to 500,000 in the ensuing decade. This expansive initiative aims to transition 95% of fuel-operated vehicles to electric models.
In its commitment to accelerating the shift towards electric mobility, the Ethiopian government instituted a ban on the importation of gasoline and diesel vehicles in response to rising global fuel prices, a policy enacted early last year.
