The Addis Ababa City Administration has introduced 100 electric buses, assembled locally with components from China, to promote electric mobility. These eco-friendly buses feature advanced technologies, operate along a new mass transit route, and aim to alleviate transport shortages. The Ethiopian government plans to significantly increase the number of electric vehicles in the country while phasing out fuel-powered vehicles.
On April 2, the Addis Ababa City Administration launched a fleet of 100 electric buses in the Ethiopian capital, aiming to promote electric mobility in the country. This initiative was reported by Xinhua and represents a significant step towards sustainable public transport.
The buses were assembled by the Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex, incorporating components that were imported from China. Equipped with advanced technologies such as an Integrated Intelligent Transportation System and a Fare Collection System, these buses will enhance the commuting experience for city residents along the newly established Bus Rapid Transit route.
Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, highlighted that these environmentally friendly buses produce zero emissions while providing a comfortable ride with increased passenger capacity. They will operate on dedicated bus lanes, allowing for more rapid travel for commuters, thereby addressing the public transport shortages in Addis Ababa.
Currently, over 100,000 electric vehicles are on Ethiopian roads, with government plans to increase this figure to 500,000 in the next ten years, aiming to replace 95 percent of fuel-powered vehicles. To support this transition to electric mobility, the government implemented a ban on the import of gasoline and diesel vehicles last year in response to rising fuel prices globally.
The introduction of 100 electric buses in Addis Ababa signifies a commitment to enhancing sustainable public transport and reducing emissions in Ethiopia. Through advanced technologies and efficient transport systems, these buses will provide a significant improvement to the city’s commuting infrastructure.
