A member of the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Constable Peter Loverage Mombe, has been sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment for soliciting an $800 bribe. He faced charges of criminal abuse of duty as a public officer after demanding payment from truck owner Francis Nembire. The incident occurred on August 2, 2023, at a service station in Harare, where Mombe was accused of soliciting the bribe for the release of a vehicle seized for alleged illegal transportation of lithium ore.
Following repeated calls for the bribe, Nembire reported the matter to the ZRP Internal Investigations Unit. Authorities coordinated a sting operation where they provided trap money for the transaction. During the arranged meeting at the service station, Mombe received the money but attempted to flee upon realizing he was being observed by police detectives, discarding the cash in the process. However, he was apprehended immediately at the scene.
