ARPC Declares Cyclone Event for Tropical Cyclone Dianne

The ARPC has declared ex-Tropical Cyclone Dianne a cyclone event following its impact on Western Australia. The cyclone made landfall as a Category 1 storm, leading to significant rainfall and flooding. The declaration activates insurance coverage under the federal reinsurance pool, established to support households and small businesses in cyclone-prone areas.

The Australian Reinsurance Pool Corporation (ARPC) has officially declared ex-Tropical Cyclone Dianne a cyclone event, which impacted significant areas of Western Australia last weekend. The cyclone made landfall early Saturday morning as a Category 1 cyclone before diminishing to a tropical low, according to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. The cyclone has resulted in heavy rainfall and flooding affecting both personal and commercial properties, as well as key infrastructure.

Christopher Wallace, CEO of ARPC, announced that Dianne was designated a cyclone event at 2:18 a.m. local time on Saturday, initiating the claims period. According to the reinsurance pool regulations, coverage is activated within 24 hours after the Bureau of Meteorology confirms the cyclone’s existence and its potential impact on Australia.

Dianne is the most recent cyclone classified as an event under the Terrorism and Cyclone Insurance Act 2003, following similar designations for Tropical Cyclone Isla in April and Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle earlier in February. The cyclone reinsurance pool, introduced in July 2022, provides coverage for household, strata, and small business property insurance throughout Australia.

The pool is supported by a government guarantee amounting to A$10 billion and is managed by ARPC. Its primary goal is to lower premium costs and enhance competition in cyclone-affected areas by not seeking a profit margin. Over 880,000 residential and small business insurance policies in northern Australia are anticipated to be eligible for coverage through this pool.

In conclusion, the declaration of Tropical Cyclone Dianne as a cyclone event by the ARPC illustrates the continuing impact of cyclones in Australia. With the Department of Meteorology’s warnings triggering insurance coverage, the cyclone reinsurance pool aims to provide essential support to affected individuals and businesses. This initiative serves to stabilize insurance premiums and enhance marketplace competition, thereby benefiting the communities at risk.
