Authorities have warned of an approaching tropical cyclone set to impact northwest Australia within 24 hours. The system is expected to bring significant rainfall and wind gusts to the northern Kimberley coast, prompting residents to prepare for adverse weather conditions. The cyclone will likely weaken after crossing land.
The authorities have issued a tropical cyclone warning for northwest Australia, particularly the northern coast of Western Australia (WA). A tropical low storm in the Indian Ocean is anticipated to upgrade to cyclone status and make landfall as early as Friday night or Saturday morning as a category one cyclone, according to reports from News.az.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) indicated that the cyclone is expected to strike the northern Kimberley coast, a remote area located approximately 2,000 kilometers northeast of Perth. Its arrival is predicted to be accompanied by “damaging” wind gusts and heavy rainfall that may cause flash flooding in northern and western parts of Kimberley.
The affected regions may include the town of Derby, home to around 3,500 residents. In a precautionary statement, the WA Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) emphasized that, while there is “no immediate danger” to locals and visitors, preparations for severe weather should commence.
Residents are advised to reassess their cyclone action plans, check the readiness of their emergency kits, and secure boats, caravans, trailers, outdoor furnishings, and any loose items. The DFES also informed those driving to respect road closure signage and avoid driving through water of undefined depth and current.
After landfall, the BoM stated that the cyclone is expected to lose strength as it progresses southeastward.
In summary, a tropical cyclone warning has been issued for the northern coast of Western Australia. Authorities anticipate heavy rainfall and strong winds as the system approaches, prompting the public to prepare accordingly. Residents are urged to review their safety plans and secure property as they await the storm’s impact. Following landfall, the cyclone is likely to weaken.
