According to Colonel Adele Myburgh, the North West police spokesperson, law enforcement received an anonymous tip-off that prompted their action. Upon arriving at the scene, they observed numerous individuals engaged in illegal mining. Upon their arrival, many fled, but police successfully apprehended three suspects—two from Zimbabwe and one from Mozambique.
The police reportedly seized a substantial cache of explosives, including 20 capped fuses, 20 blasting cartridges, and 120 meters of detonating cord. Additionally, they confiscated 13 generators, two water pumps, and five mining drills. The suspects are expected to face charges including unlawful possession of explosives, illegal mining, and violations of South Africa’s Immigration Act, 2002, appearing in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on the same day.
Major General Patrick Asaneng, the acting North West Police Commissioner, commended the officers involved in this significant operation for their efforts in apprehending the suspects.
