National Security Raids Home of Former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Addison

On March 19, 2025, a raid led by Richard Jakpa at Dr. Ernest Addison’s home involved armed personnel disabling CCTV and searching for cash vaults. No vaults or cash were found, yet the raid traumatized the Addison family. This incident follows a pattern of similar raids on former officials since the new administration took office.

On March 19, 2025, armed men, approximately 20 in number and led by Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, conducted a raid on the residence of Dr. Ernest Addison, former Governor of the Bank of Ghana. The incident took place during the morning at Dr. Addison’s home located in Roman Ridge, Accra, while he was present. The armed personnel, some clad in balaclavas and equipped with AK-47 semi-automatic rifles, disabled the CCTV system upon arrival.

Upon entering, the National Security team demanded that Dr. Addison guide them to any secured locations, referred to as “vaults,” within his home. Dr. Addison informed them that he did not possess any vaults or large amounts of cash. Despite this denial, the security personnel reportedly proceeded to ransack the house in their search.

Subsequent to their investigation, no vaults or significant cash amounts were discovered. Nonetheless, the team confiscated the CCTV monitor and control unit before leaving. Sources indicate that the raid left Dr. Addison and his family traumatized, according to a close associate of the family.

A former senior official of the central bank remarked, “This is the first time in the history of Ghana that such a thing is happening to a Governor of the Bank of Ghana. This is both scary and messy.”

This operation marks the second instance in which Mr. Jakpa has commanded a raid on the home of a prominent former official from the previous Akufo-Addo administration since President John Mahama’s inauguration on January 7, 2025. Notably, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s longest-serving finance minister, also experienced a similar raid at his residence in Labone, Accra, on February 10, 2025, which was recorded on CCTV and made available to the public.

The National Security raid on Dr. Ernest Addison’s home marks a significant and concerning development in Ghana’s political landscape. The actions taken by armed personnel raise questions about protocol and the treatment of former high-ranking officials. Additionally, the trauma inflicted upon the Addison family highlights the potential implications of such searches for personal security and civil liberties in the nation.
