The Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Salim Mvurya, has called upon Kenyans to prioritize safety while enjoying the 2025 World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally. The event, which begins on Thursday in Nairobi, will feature high-speed action in Naivasha through Sunday. Mvurya stated, “Remember to be cautious because the rally cars are quite fast, thrilling, and spectacular. We all want to return home in one piece.”
Enhanced safety protocols have been introduced this year, facilitating a higher turnout of spectators since the Safari Rally’s return to the WRC calendar in 2021. President William Ruto is set to officially launch the event at City Hall Way, Nairobi, before moving towards the action in Naivasha.
Mvurya also underscored the government’s commitment to supporting female participants in motorsport. He noted the presence of an all-female crew, comprising Pauline Shegu and Linet Ayuko, along with Tinashe Gatimu, who will be navigated by her mother. “They are role models inspiring young Kenyan women to embrace motorsport. According to Charles Gacheru, the CEO of WRC Safari Rally Kenya, the preliminary shakedown sessions already exhibited extreme difficulties. He commented, “The competition was tough. This is going to be the most challenging rally ever seen in Kenya.” The highly demanding 32km Camp Moran loop is expected to significantly test competitors’ skills. Finnish driver Kalle Rovanperä recorded the fastest time during the shakedown, edging out world champion Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak, setting the stage for an intensely competitive weekend ahead.
