Stephen Acquah, a professional footballer, has appeared in an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly robbing a salesperson. The incident occurred at Sakumono around 4:30 a.m., during which he reportedly demanded the victim’s handbag. Acquah has pleaded not guilty to the charges of robbery and escape from lawful custody, with the prosecution planning to amend the charges to include causing harm.
The court, presided over by Mr. Jojo Amoah Hagan, granted Acquah bail amounting to GH¢100,000, conditional upon two sureties, with at least one required to possess movable or immovable property. The case has been adjourned until March 27, 2025. Details presented by the prosecution included the victim’s identity, Christina Benyiwa Baidoo, a salesperson living at Sakumono NTHC Estate.
On January 21, 2025, Baidoo left home early to attend an appointment in Cape Coast but was assaulted by Acquah at Vivian Farms shortly thereafter. When confronted, she resisted his demand for her handbag, which contained essential personal items and cash. Acquah reportedly inflicted wounds on her hand with a knife, leading to her sustaining serious injuries before she reluctantly surrendered her belongings.
Following the robbery, Baidoo cried for help, resulting in Acquah’s capture by the Sakumono Police Patrol Team. Initial medical treatment was administered at Sakumono Hospital, after which she was referred to Tema General Hospital for further care due to the severity of her wounds, which measured 6×3 centimeters deep. Subsequently, she was directed to the 37 Military Hospital for potential plastic surgery.
In a subsequent incident, while being escorted to the police charge office, Acquah escaped in handcuffs but was apprehended shortly thereafter, with evidence including a bag and a knife. The prosecutor noted that Acquah admitted to the offense in his caution statement.
