Recent Murder of Mondlane Supporter in Inhambane Raises Concerns

The murder of Leão de Deus, a supporter of Venâncio Mondlane, has been reported by the “Decide” Electoral Platform in Inhambane, Mozambique. With his death, the total of Mondlane supporters murdered by death squads has reached 13. The police remain silent on these incidents, which reflect ongoing violence against opposition members in the country.

The Mozambican NGO known as the “Decide” Electoral Platform has condemned the murder of Leão de Deus, a supporter of former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, in the Zavala district of Inhambane province. It has been reported that he was kidnapped and subsequently shot in the Chissibuca region. A statement from “Decide” emphasized De Deus’s dedication to Mondlane’s political movement.

The Mozambican police have not yet issued any comments regarding these recent killings. Following the recent deaths, the number of Mondlane supporters reportedly murdered by death squads has reached a total of 13. Just last week, two supporters were also gunned down in Massinga district.

Furthermore, additional violent incidents have occurred, including the assassination of Mondlane’s lawyer, Elvino Dias, and election agent Paulo Guambe in central Maputo. Despite these murders happening in a populous area, no arrests have been made. In a separate incident on March 15, João de Deus Nhachengo was also kidnapped and brutally killed.

Overall, the count of opposition members killed in this post-electoral violence has tragically reached 14. Leão de Deus, recognized for his steadfast support, is among a growing list of victims, highlighting the troubling political climate in Mozambique.

The rise in violence against supporters of Venâncio Mondlane underscores a disturbing trend in Mozambican politics. The unaddressed murders reflect a climate of fear and uncertainty, with significant reports of targeted attacks on opposition members. It is imperative for authorities to investigate these crimes thoroughly in order to restore safety and justice.
