Raid on Former BoG Governor’s Home Raises Alarm in Ghana

Richard Jakpa led a raid on Dr. Ernest Addison’s home with 20 armed men, searching for alleged vaults. No such vaults or large cash was found, and the incident left Addison’s family traumatized. This marks a worrying trend as Jakpa previously raided another high-profile former official’s home.

Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, has led a raid on the home of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison. Approximately twenty armed men, some in balaclavas and armed with AK-47 rifles, conducted this raid on the morning of March 19, 2025, at Dr. Addison’s residence in Roman Ridge, Accra, where he was present during the incident.

Upon arrival, the armed team disabled the residential CCTV system and demanded Dr. Addison to locate supposed ‘vaults’ within his home. Shocked, Dr. Addison informed the officers that he had no such vaults or large cash deposits at his residence. Regardless, the security personnel proceeded to search the premises, reportedly ransacking the property in their pursuit.

No vaults or substantial amounts of cash were discovered, as confirmed by various sources. Ultimately, the team removed the CCTV monitor and control unit, leaving Dr. Addison’s family traumatized by the experience, according to a close associate. A retired senior official from the central bank remarked on the unprecedented nature of this event, expressing concern about the implications for Ghana, stating, “This is the first time in the history of Ghana that such a thing is happening to a Governor of the Bank of Ghana. This is both scary and messy.”

This incident marks at least the second raid orchestrated by Jakpa against high-profile former officials of the previous administration. Earlier, on February 10, 2025, a similar operation targeted Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s longest-serving finance minister, at his residence in Labone, Accra. Surveillance footage from that event was later released to the public, depicting the raid in detail. The ongoing situation raises significant concerns regarding governance and the treatment of former officials in the country.

The raid on Dr. Ernest Addison’s home by Richard Jakpa and his armed team signifies a troubling precedent in Ghana, marking a rare incident involving a former governor of the Bank of Ghana. The trauma inflicted on Dr. Addison’s family and the implications of such enforcement actions are deeply concerning. As this pattern of attacks on former officials continues, it raises questions about the security and political climate in the nation.
