India and Mauritius Collaborate on AI and Digital Public Infrastructure for Development

India and Mauritius have signed an agreement to leverage AI and Digital Public Infrastructure for development, launching the “Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions” initiative. India will provide support through technology, loans, and grants, with a focus on health, education, and capacity building. The partnership aims to foster sustainable growth and extensive cooperation between the two nations.

India and Mauritius have entered a significant agreement to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for enhancing human development. This partnership aims to implement the “Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions” initiative, which emphasizes trade development, sustainable progress, and collective security. Support from India will be extended through technology exchange, concessional loans, and grants to foster this bilateral collaboration.

During Mauritius’ National Day celebrations, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, discussing the strengthening of their relationship into an Enhanced Strategic Partnership. They explored collaboration in infrastructure, housing, digital technology, health, AI, capacity building, and sustainable growth. Modi emphasized the ongoing commitment to improving the lives of the people in both nations.

Previously, in July, India announced plans to integrate AI into its digital public infrastructure, enhancing efficiencies in its digital ecosystem. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Aadhaar system, which holds the record as the largest biometric identification system, form part of India’s DPI framework. This integration aims to facilitate a significant advancement towards what India terms “Digital Public Intelligence.”

Modi highlighted the crucial role of people-to-people ties in this partnership, extending cooperation in digital health, education, skill development, and mobility. He reiterated the commitment to utilizing AI and DPI for the welfare of humanity, asserting that the partnership is anchored in mutual goals for security and development across regions.

The leaders also outlined aspirations for deepening cooperation within various domains, including health infrastructure and quality education in Mauritius. They agreed on the importance of timely implementation of a Digital Health Office system and other digitization efforts to enhance healthcare services.

According to the “India-Mauritius Joint Vision for an Enhanced Strategic Partnership,” India expressed its readiness to assist Mauritius in its digital transformation endeavors across multiple sectors. Discussions included the implementation of an e-judiciary system and the digitization of Mahatma Gandhi Institute archives, along with strengthening ICT cooperation and cybersecurity.

Prime Minister Modi announced plans for training 500 civil servants from Mauritius in India over the next five years. Moreover, an agreement for mutual trade settlement in local currency has been established to enhance economic cooperation. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a sustainable and prosperous future through joint initiatives.

In summary, the integration of advanced technologies like AI and DPI will play a pivotal role in the mutual development of India and Mauritius. The collaborative efforts across sectors will not only enhance governance and service delivery but also support the advancement of mutual benefits in trade, health, and education.

The partnership between India and Mauritius marks a significant step towards utilizing artificial intelligence and digital public infrastructure for sustainable development. By collaborating across various sectors, including health, education, and technology, both nations aim to enhance their capabilities and strengthen ties. The commitments made will promote mutual growth and shared prosperity, reflecting a robust and forward-looking relationship between the two countries.
