The project, supported by the Cameroonian government and other entities, aims to create jobs and establish Cameroon as a hub for electric mobility in Africa by 2026.
Bee Group is initiating a transformative electric mobility project in Cameroon with an investment of RM4.5 million (CFA610 million) to introduce 40 e-motorcycles and charging stations. This partnership with Chinese manufacturer, Tembo Electronical Technology, aims to reduce costs, pollution, and promote sustainable transport in urban areas. The project is set to commence in July 2025.
The pilot phase will roll out in June 2025, deploying 40 electric motorcycles across Douala, Yaoundé, Bertoua, and Bafoussam, with 10 motorcycles per city. Each motorcycle will be equipped with four batteries, allowing for two to operate while the others recharge at stations located at TotalEnergies and Ola Energy sites. Each station will be capable of storing 12 batteries, thus ensuring a sustainable energy supply.
Post the pilot phase, Bee Group intends to import an additional 100 motorcycles and aims for local production by 2026. This endeavor is anticipated to generate local employment, decrease import costs, and facilitate technology transfer to Cameroon. Patrick Timani, the CEO of Bee Group, highlighted that the initiative intends to stimulate economic growth and position Cameroon as an electric mobility hub in Africa.
The Cameroonian government supports the project in collaboration with 3S Motors and TotalEnergies. According to the 2025 finance law, electric vehicles are exempt from the 12.5% excise duty, and new motorcycles, batteries, and charging stations will benefit from a 50% tax reduction for the upcoming 24 months. Such financial incentives significantly lessen the costs associated with adopting electric vehicles and fostering sustainable mobility.
Besides economic advantages, the project aims to lower transportation fares and reduce pollution levels in urban areas. In Douala, where mototaxis constitute 61% of trips, this initiative is expected to profoundly enhance urban mobility. Bee Group envisages a sustainable transition in transport that decreases dependence on fossil fuels while providing economic prospects for local riders.
Following the introduction in Cameroon, Bee Group aspires to extend this project to other African countries.
