Nigeria is scheduled to play two matches during this qualification period: the first against Rwanda on Friday in Kigali and the second against Zimbabwe four days later. Players began arriving at the training camp on Sunday, including star forward Victor Osimhen, who expressed his determination to lead Nigeria to the World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Coach Eric Chelle and other team officials joined the squad, commencing training sessions on Tuesday. The first players to arrive at the camp on Monday evening included: Amas Obasogie, Tolu Arokodare, Kayode Bankole, Victor Osimhen, Simon Moses, Bruno Onyemaechi, and Papa Daniel.
Nigeria currently occupies the fifth position in the standings, trailing Rwanda by four points. As the new head coach, Eric Chelle is under pressure to achieve positive results, being the third coach to lead the Eagles in World Cup qualifying matches since November 2023. His predecessors were Jose Peseiro, who managed two draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, and Finidi George, who faced defeat against Benin and drew with South Africa.
Chelle has already made a substitution in the squad, replacing injured Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Nathan Tella with Joshua Torunarigha from Gent in Belgium. This change reflects his commitment to field a competitive team during the qualifiers.
