The Nigerian Navy, specifically the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Badagry, has successfully intercepted a significant amount of illegal goods during operations in Lagos. Between March 7 and March 14, they seized 13,800 litres of petrol and 71 bags of foreign rice following intelligence reports targeting suspected smugglers in the area.
Capt. Oyeleye Omotayo, the Commanding Officer of FOB Badagry, stated that an operation on March 14, aimed at combating smuggling, began at 2:54 a.m., resulting in the interception of products intended for illegal export. Although the smugglers managed to evade initial water patrols, they were caught by land patrols shortly thereafter. The operation, which began around 3:30 a.m., led to the discovery and subsequent seizure of the foreign rice, while the suspects fled upon sighting naval forces.
In another operation, conducted the same day, the intelligence team received a report regarding petrol stockpiling at Bollington beach. After swift action, they discovered four vehicles at the scene intended for smuggling, although the suspects escaped. Additionally, 234 jerry cans filled with petrol, amounting to 5,850 litres, were retrieved. The Navy also reported the seizure of 7,770 litres of petrol in other operations carried out within Badagry communities.
On March 7 and 8, the Navy confiscated a total of 7,950 litres of petrol from local filling stations to prevent these illegal products from entering circulation. Capt. Omotayo emphasized the Navy’s commitment to combating smuggling and enhancing regional security, in alignment with the Federal Government’s directives under the Strategic Directive 2023-06. He cautioned perpetrators and their collaborators that they would face serious consequences if they continued such illegal activities.
The Nigerian Navy expressed its intention to maintain robust operations against smuggling while assuring cooperation with sister agencies such as the Nigeria Customs Service, further fostering support for the host community in Badagry.
In conclusion, the Nigerian Navy’s recent operations in Lagos exemplify their proactive approach to combating smuggling and ensuring regional security. The successful interception of illegal petrol and foreign rice reflects their commitment to enforcing maritime laws and safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s territorial waters. Continuous collaboration with other agencies and a stern warning to smugglers indicate the Navy’s determination to protect national interests.
