The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reportedly disrupted attempts by drug trafficking organizations to smuggle illegal drugs from Nigeria to five countries, including the United States and Saudi Arabia. According to NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi, the agency intercepted consignments containing cocaine, tramadol, and other narcotics intended for these destinations.
Mr. Babafemi indicated that the traffickers planned to send these drugs through logistics companies and the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, utilizing creative concealment methods. Items such as prayer beads, board game packs, and female clothing were used to hide the drugs. Two suspects have been arrested in connection with these attempts.
One of the detained individuals, a 43-year-old businesswoman, was caught trying to board an Air France flight to Italy on March 8, with 190 parcels of tramadol and cannabis concealed in her luggage. Another arrest occurred on March 11, involving a 60-year-old suspect attempting to ship clothing containing 400 grams of cannabis to New York.
Further operations at MMIA led to the interception of over two kilograms of illicit substances including loud and molly, disguised within Vitamin C bottles and female attire. Additionally, between March 10 and March 12, 230 grams of cocaine were seized, hidden in various everyday items, intended for Saudi Arabia, Poland, and the United Arab Emirates.
Despite these efforts, the NDLEA has continued its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaigns, contributing to ongoing public awareness and education against drug trafficking.
