ITA Reports 37 Fatalities in 34 Crashes in Jamaica During Early 2025

The Island Traffic Authority reports 37 fatalities from 34 crashes in Jamaica as of February 7, 2025, marking a 12 percent decrease from the previous year. Pedestrians and motorcyclists account for the highest fatalities, with a significant portion of deaths involving vulnerable road users. Males represent 78 percent of these fatalities.

A recent report from the Island Traffic Authority (ITA) indicates that up to February 7, 2025, there have been 37 fatalities resulting from 34 road crashes in Jamaica. This statistic represents a 12 percent decrease in fatalities compared to the same timeframe in 2024, with a noted 13 percent reduction in fatal crashes overall.

Among the deceased, the breakdown includes 12 pedestrians, 10 motorcyclists, and five drivers of private vehicles, alongside four pillion passengers and two private car passengers. The data reveals that motorcyclists constitute 27 percent of this year’s fatalities, while pedestrians account for 32 percent. Private vehicle drivers represent 14 percent, pillion passengers 11 percent, and private vehicle passengers 5 percent.

Vulnerable road users, which include pedestrians, pedal cyclists, motorcyclists, and pillion passengers, collectively account for 76 percent of road-related deaths this year. Furthermore, the statistics illustrate a gender disparity, with males making up 78 percent and females 22 percent of the fatalities reported by February 7.

The alarming statistics from the Island Traffic Authority reflect a significant public safety concern on Jamaican roads, although the reduction in fatalities indicates a potentially positive trend. The disproportionate impact on vulnerable road users highlights the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and awareness campaigns to protect pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. Furthermore, the gender disparity in fatalities suggests various dimensions that could concern road safety initiatives.
