Tropical Cyclone Jude has resulted in nine deaths across Mozambique and Malawi, displacing thousands and causing heavy flooding, with ongoing challenges for relief efforts due to damaged infrastructure.
At least nine fatalities have been reported due to Tropical Cyclone Jude, as confirmed by officials on Thursday. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique stated that the cyclone resulted in six deaths, injured 20 individuals, and displaced 9,525 residents across the northern provinces of Nampula and Niasa, along with the central province of Zambezia, as reported by News.Az.
In Malawi, the cyclone has claimed the lives of three people, displacing approximately 20,000 individuals in the southern region, where extensive flooding has occurred. Chiphiliro Khamula, a spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi, noted that those affected are being housed in evacuation centers to ensure their safety and well-being.
The cyclone first struck northern Mozambique early on Sunday before advancing into southern Malawi, where it unleashed heavy flooding from Monday to Wednesday. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has indicated that relief efforts are being significantly hindered by the destruction of access roads and bridges.
This incident follows the devastation wrought by Cyclone Chido in December of the previous year, which resulted in 73 deaths in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi, underscoring the ongoing vulnerability of these regions to severe weather events.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has severely impacted Mozambique and Malawi, leading to nine fatalities and widespread displacement. With significant injuries and shelter needs arising from the flooding, relief operations are currently challenged by infrastructural damage. This cyclone follows last year’s Cyclone Chido, highlighting the persistent risk faced by these regions due to cyclonic activity and natural disasters.
