Tropical Cyclone Jude Causes Casualties and Displacement in Mozambique and Malawi

Tropical Cyclone Jude has resulted in nine fatalities across Mozambique and Malawi, causing significant displacement and injury. Mozambique reports six deaths and thousands displaced, while Malawi counts three fatalities and extensive homelessness due to flooding. Relief operations are hampered by infrastructure damage.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has claimed at least nine lives across Mozambique and Malawi. Officials from Mozambique’s National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) reported that six fatalities occurred in the provinces of Nampula and Niasa, alongside 20 injuries and the displacement of 9,525 individuals. Meanwhile, Malawi confirmed three deaths and that approximately 20,000 people were rendered homeless due to severe flooding in the southern region following the cyclone’s impact.

Chiphiliro Khamula, spokesperson for Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), indicated that those displaced are currently being housed in emergency evacuation centers. The cyclone, which struck northern Mozambique early on Sunday, continued its path toward southern Malawi, leading to significant flooding observed from Monday through Wednesday.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), relief efforts face considerable challenges, particularly due to washed-out roads and bridges hindering access. This incident follows a recent cyclone, Cyclone Chido, which impacted both nations last December, resulting in 73 deaths in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has had a devastating impact, with reported fatalities and extensive displacement across Mozambique and Malawi. The lack of accessible infrastructure poses significant challenges for ongoing relief efforts. Local authorities are working diligently to support the displaced populations, following the tragic events of previous cyclones that have similarly affected these regions.
