On Thursday night, a Bangladeshi businessman was tragically shot dead in South Africa during an armed robbery. The incident unfolded around 9 PM in Vepener, within the Free State Province. The victim, identified as Kamrul Islam, aged 33, hailed from Karmullahpur village in the Daganbhuiyan upazila of Feni district, Bangladesh.
Kamrul’s elder brother, Kamruzzaman, confirmed the details of the incident. He shared that Kamrul had relocated to South Africa twelve years prior, initially securing employment before establishing his own business. Kamrul had been planning to return to Bangladesh in the near future.
The robbery took a violent turn when two assailants entered Kamrul’s shop as he was closing for the night. They stole cash and valuables before compelling him to step outside, allegedly in search of more money that he might have had in his car. Eyewitnesses reported that they shot him in the left side of his chest, resulting in his death on the scene.
Kamruzzaman stated that the family is in touch with relatives currently residing in South Africa and is making arrangements to repatriate Kamrul’s remains. He has also sought assistance from the Bangladeshi government in this matter. Meanwhile, Daganbhuiyan Upazila Nirbahi Officer, SM Azharul Islam, expressed his awareness of the tragedy and is coordinating efforts with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to address the situation.
