The Kenya Meteorological Department warns of heavy rain across various counties from March 14 to March 17, with specific advisories for Highland East and Southeastern regions. Residents are also advised about significant temperature changes, including cold nights and hot days, emphasizing the need for preparedness.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning for moderate to heavy rainfall across the country from March 14 to March 17. The advisory, released on March 13, highlights significant rain expected in Highland East counties, including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi, where moderate rain will initially prevail, followed by heavier downpours later in the weekend.
In addition, counties in Highland West and the Lake Victoria basin, such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo-Marakwet, should prepare for heavy rain starting March 15. Other affected counties include Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
Residents of the Southeastern counties—Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, along with the inland regions of Tana River—are also advised to expect heavy rains commencing on Saturday afternoon and lasting through the following three days until March 17. Coastal counties, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, are predicted to receive lighter rainfall.
In conjunction with the rains, a temperature advisory has been issued, particularly for the Highland East counties where nighttime temperatures may drop to as low as 5°C for the next five nights, starting March 14. Conversely, the counties in the Western region are forecasted to experience soaring daytime temperatures, potentially reaching up to 35°C. This extreme heat is also likely in Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has alerted residents to prepare for significant rainfall and temperature variations this weekend. While heavy rain is forecast across various regions, particularly in the Highland East and Southeastern counties, temperatures will vary greatly between cold nights and hot days in other areas. Citizens should exercise caution and stay informed about changing weather conditions during this period.
