The International Organisation for Migration is set to distribute 2,800 emergency kits in Mozambique for those affected by tropical cyclone Jude, which has resulted in 14 deaths and significant destruction across multiple provinces. With ongoing challenges in recovery, additional support is urgently needed.
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) announced on Friday that it will distribute 2,800 emergency kits to individuals affected by tropical cyclone Jude in the Zambézia and Nampula provinces of Mozambique. These kits are essential for providing immediate assistance to those in need following the cyclone’s devastation.
Cyclone Jude made landfall on Monday, causing significant casualties with at least 14 reported deaths and 60 injuries. Approximately 100,410 individuals have been affected across the central and northern provinces, including Tete, Manica, Niassa, and Cabo Delgado.
The emergency kits provided by IOM include essential items such as mats, mosquito nets, blankets, and tarpaulins, which are crucial for the recovery efforts. IOM emphasized the urgent need for support in the impacted provinces.
Government reports, presented by spokesman Inocêncio Impissa, indicate that the cyclone has destroyed 30 health centres and impacted numerous families, schools, and agricultural areas. Over 19,961 families have been affected, with 20,244 houses either partially or completely destroyed.
This disaster occurs amidst Mozambique’s rainy season, which lasts from October to April, a time when cyclones such as Chido and Dikeledi have already caused significant damage. From December to January, these prior cyclones affected approximately 736,000 people and resulted in extensive infrastructure damage.
From 2019 to 2023, extreme weather events, including cyclones and storms, have led to over 1,016 deaths and impacted around 4.9 million people in Mozambique. The country is recognized as one of the most severely affected by climate change, facing cyclical flooding, tropical cyclones, and periods of severe drought.
In conclusion, the IOM’s distribution of emergency kits to the victims of tropical cyclone Jude highlights the ongoing humanitarian efforts in Mozambique. Despite facing significant challenges, the agency remains active in assessing needs and delivering critical aid. The devastating impact of the cyclone underscores the urgent need for support and the country’s vulnerability to climate change-related disasters.
