Effective Water Exercises for Weight Loss: A Comprehensive Study

A recent study highlights the efficacy of specific water exercises for weight loss, indicating that individuals may lose approximately 3.175 kg within a span of 10 weeks. Regular participation in activities such as Zumba, yoga, and water running for an hour contributed to this weight reduction and a decrease in waist circumference averaging 3 cm, according to a report by “Russia Today.”

The advantage of performing exercises in water stems from the increased resistance it offers, which enhances calorie expenditure and facilitates higher weight loss. Furthermore, water-based activities alleviate stress on the joints, particularly the knees and ankles, thus minimizing the likelihood of injuries, especially among overweight participants.

The research, conducted by institutions from Korea and China, monitored nearly 300 participants aged 20 to 70, revealing that water exercises were especially beneficial for women over the age of 45. The study encompassed the findings of 10 clinical trials across multiple countries, including Malaysia, Brazil, India, the United States, and the Netherlands, examining the overall impact of water exercises on weight management.

All subjects, categorized as overweight or obese, engaged in a water fitness program that lasted between 6 to 12 weeks, which featured 2-3 sessions per week of activities like water Zumba and underwater treadmill training. Results indicated an average loss of 2 kg in under 10 weeks, while participants adhering to the program for 10 weeks or more achieved an average weight loss of 3 kg.

Dr. Jongchul Park from Pukyong University in Korea stated that further research is necessary to determine whether underwater exercises yield greater results compared to traditional land-based exercises. A previous Polish study from 2017 also confirmed similar findings, reporting an average weight reduction of 3.4 kg in overweight women undertaking underwater exercises over six months.

This study underscores the potential of water exercises as an effective means of weight management, particularly for overweight individuals and middle-aged women. The combination of resistance training in water and reduced joint strain is vital for enhancing weight loss safely.
