On Thursday evening in Wepener city, Free State Province, South Africa, a Bangladeshi national, 33-year-old Kamrul Islam, was tragically shot and killed. Originally from Karmullahpur village in Daganbhuiyan upazila, Feni, he had moved to South Africa twelve years ago to establish a livelihood and subsequently opened his own business after a brief employment period.
According to Kamrul’s younger brother, Kamruzzaman, the incident occurred while Kamrul was closing his shop around 9:00 PM. Two assailants confronted him with firearms, demanding cash and valuables. After robbing him, they suspected additional cash was stored in Kamrul’s vehicle and forcibly took him outside.
A confrontation ensued, during which one robber shot Kamrul in the chest, resulting in his immediate death. Kamrul recently built a new house in his hometown and had plans to return to Bangladesh to marry in a few months. The family is grieving, particularly their mother, who has been unwell since receiving the news of her son’s passing.
The family has reached out to the Bangladesh embassy for assistance in repatriating Kamrul’s body. SM Azharul Islam, the upazila nirbahi officer, stated that the local administration is prepared to support Kamrul’s family in any necessary arrangements regarding the body’s return.
The tragic incident highlights the dangers faced by expatriates seeking livelihoods abroad. Kamrul Islam’s untimely death not only betrays the aspirations he held for his future in Bangladesh but also signifies the distress experienced by his family.
