Cyclone Jude Devastates Northern Mozambique, Causing Six Fatalities

Cyclone Jude has caused at least six deaths and destroyed over 900 homes in northern Mozambique. This storm, with winds reaching 195 km/h and heavy rainfall, is the third cyclone the nation has faced in four months. The continuous cycle of cyclones highlights the vulnerabilities of Mozambique’s communities.

The cyclone that recently impacted northern Mozambique has tragically resulted in the deaths of at least six individuals. Additionally, the storm has led to the destruction of more than 900 homes, as reported by local authorities. Cyclone Jude struck on Monday, producing wind speeds of up to 195 kilometers per hour and delivering over 250 millimeters of rain within a 24-hour period, according to the National Institute of Meteorology.

This devastating weather event marks the third cyclone to affect Mozambique in just four months. In total, Cyclone Jude has caused injuries to approximately 20 people and has affected around 9,500 residents. Although the cyclone has now weakened to a tropical storm, it continues to produce heavy rainfall and strong winds, leading to ongoing threats.

The recent storm follows two other significant cyclones. Cyclone Chido, which hit in December, resulted in the deaths of at least 120 people and led to the destruction of nearly 120,000 homes. Likewise, Cyclone Dikeledi, occurring in mid-January, caused the loss of at least five lives along with nearly 3,500 homes being destroyed. The continual occurrence of these severe weather events raises concerns about the impact on the impoverished nation and its vulnerable communities.

Cyclone Jude has wrought considerable destruction in northern Mozambique, resulting in at least six fatalities and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. As the country faces repeated cyclones within a short period, the situation underscores the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and disaster preparedness to mitigate the effects of such natural disasters on vulnerable populations.
