SMA Altenso Achieves Gigawatt Milestone in Renewable Hydrogen Technology

SMA Altenso, a subsidiary of SMA Solar Technology AG, has surpassed 1 GW in power delivered for hydrogen applications, achieving this milestone through its innovative project in Namibia. With extensive experience in green hydrogen production, Altenso combines photovoltaics and battery storage technology to contribute to the decarbonization of industrial processes. The firm is recognized as a leader in sustainable energy solutions, emphasized by notable figures such as Dr. Jens Eiko Birkholz and Jürgen Reinert.

SMA Altenso, a subsidiary of SMA Solar Technology AG, is enhancing the flexible utilization of renewable energy through innovative global initiatives. Following the successful delivery of SMA inverter technology for Cleanergy Solutions Namibia’s hydrogen project, Altenso has achieved a substantial milestone by surpassing 1 gigawatt (GW) in power delivered for hydrogen applications. This project, which integrates photovoltaics, battery storage, and hydrogen production, underscores Altenso’s position as a leader in sustainable energy solutions.

Dr. Jens Eiko Birkholz, Head of Sales & Business Development at Altenso, noted the achievement of the gigawatt milestone and the execution of over 80 hydrogen projects, primarily aimed at producing green hydrogen from PV and wind energy sources. He emphasized Altenso’s considerable technological prowess and international project management skills, which are essential for managing increasingly intricate projects, including those offshore. These initiatives facilitate the production of up to 130,000 tons of green hydrogen per annum, significantly aiding the decarbonization of industrial sectors.

SMA CEO Jürgen Reinert highlighted the necessity of stable grid integration and load control within the evolving hydrogen and renewable energy landscape. He underscored the pivotal role of SMA’s advanced technologies alongside Altenso’s project expertise in advancing renewable energy integration and influencing the future energy landscape.

In the Namibia project, Altenso is spearheading system integration for a battery storage system (BESS) and delivering power-to-gas (P2G) solutions for hydrogen production. Installation of the PV farm and battery inverter technology is expected to complete by the end of 2024, with hydrogen production slated for mid-2025. SMA’s specialized rectifier technology, based on Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) technology, ensures compatibility with various electrolyzers while bolstering grid stability with included services such as fault ride-through and reactive power support.

To optimize sustainable hydrogen production, Altenso has developed an advanced energy management system (EMS) tailored for projects of this nature, which leverages PV forecasts alongside dynamic demand profiles for efficiency.

SMA Altenso has made significant strides in renewable energy, achieving a milestone of over 1 GW in hydrogen applications through its project in Namibia. With Dr. Jens Eiko Birkholz and SMA CEO Jürgen Reinert emphasizing the technological advancements and project management capacity, the company continues to lead in the production of green hydrogen. Their innovative solutions are critical to enhancing grid stability and facilitating the decarbonization of industrial processes, illustrating their commitment to sustainable energy.
