Tropical Cyclone Jude recently made landfall in Mozambique, moving towards Malawi, specifically impacting Blantyre, where my brother’s missionary son, Bryce, was recently transferred. I had not anticipated Bryce experiencing a cyclone in Malawi, which entirely surprised me. Upon researching, I discovered that the cyclone hit Mozambique with winds reaching 149 kilometers per hour, causing considerable devastation, including flooding and structural damage, while impairing access to basic necessities for many women and children.
I have often reflected on the various construction methods employed around the world, such as the concrete-block homes in Chile versus the fragile cardboard structures I encountered there. In Hawaii, homes are reinforced with steel to endure hurricanes, while my own residence is constructed from brick. Blantyre, home to over 800,000 residents and a hub of commerce, raised concerns regarding its resilience to Cyclone Jude’s effects.
Fortunately, tracking updates indicated that the cyclone’s path shifted back towards the ocean, sparing Blantyre from the worst of the storm but still subjecting it to heavy rainfall. Bryce has reported significant rain, highlighting the impact of the storm.
As I navigate severe winds in my own location, I note the menacing speed of Cyclone Jude at 149 km/h, which converts to approximately 92.58 mph, with gusts in Mozambique reaching up to 120 mph. Presently, Jude’s winds are sustained at 75 mph, similar to the forecast for my area of 65-75 mph. I have observed these wind conditions but remain unconcerned about my home’s integrity. Nevertheless, I am intrigued to see how our new roof will withstand such gusts.
The winds may destroy physical structures, but spiritual turbulence can inflict deeper damage. Jesus emphasized the importance of a strong foundation amidst life’s storms. He likened those who listen and act on His teachings to a wise man who built his house on a solid rock. This rock symbolizes enduring stability against turbulent times, contrasting with a foolish man who builds on sand, resulting in inevitable downfall.
Helaman also taught his sons to build their foundation on this Rock to endure life’s challenges. In doing so, we can find inner strength when confronted with adversity. The steadfast faith in Christ promises that while winds will inevitably blow, we can remain secure in our beliefs, assuring us that our foundations shall not falter, much like the house built upon the Rock.
In summary, Tropical Cyclone Jude has reminded us of the unpredictable nature of storms, both physical and spiritual. As we witness the destruction caused by such natural disasters, it is vital to recognize the enduring strength derived from faith. Building one’s foundation upon Christ, akin to the wise man’s house upon the rock, provides lasting security against life’s inevitable challenges. Consequently, with faith as our anchor, we remain steadfast regardless of the winds that may assail us.
