The cyclone is projected to travel westward and is expected to reach Malawi by Tuesday afternoon, though its speed will diminish to below 35 knots by that time.
The Nampula coastal districts, including Nacala, Mossuril, Memba, Mozambique Island, and Monapo, are predicted to experience heavy rainfall ranging from 100 to 200 millimeters within just 24 hours due to the cyclone’s influence. Fortunately, rains have already commenced across Nampula province since Saturday evening, indicating the impending severity of the storm’s impact.
The National Disaster Management Institute (INGD) of Mozambique has assessed that more than 341,000 residents in the province are at heightened risk due to Cyclone Jude. In light of this situation, the provincial directorate of education has mandated the closure of all schools throughout Monday to ensure the safety of students and staff amid the storm.
Moreover, Cyclone Jude has caused significant infrastructural damage, resulting in downed electricity pylons. As of Monday morning, approximately 40,000 customers served by the public electricity company, EDM, were experiencing power outages. In addition, Mozambique Airlines (LAM) proactively canceled all domestic flights heading to the northern regions of the country, affecting flights to key cities such as Nampula, Nacala, and Pemba. LAM has pledged to assist affected passengers by arranging transportation once the weather conditions improve and flights can resume safely.
