Rahul Gandhi Calls for Parliamentary Discussion on Voter List Issues

Rahul Gandhi has urged for a parliamentary discussion on voter list discrepancies, supported by Trinamool Congress member Saugata Roy, who cited specific flaws in West Bengal and Haryana. Both leaders emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive revision of the electoral lists, particularly before upcoming elections.

On Monday, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, called for a discussion in the Lok Sabha regarding the controversy surrounding voter lists. During the Zero Hour session, he indicated that various political parties have raised significant concerns about these lists. He stated, “We accept your remarks that the government does not make voter lists. But we demand a discussion on the issue.” He emphasized that this is a collective call from the opposition across states, including Maharashtra.

Furthermore, Trinamool Congress member Saugata Roy highlighted flaws in the voter lists, specifically citing incidents in which voters with identical Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers were found in Murshidabad and Burdwan constituencies, as well as in Haryana. Roy noted that a Trinamool delegation would be consulting the newly-appointed Chief Election Commissioner to address these concerns and advocated for a comprehensive revision of the voter lists ahead of the assembly elections in West Bengal and Assam scheduled for next year.

Roy remarked on the seriousness of these issues by pointing out the inflation of voter lists in Maharashtra and the inaccuracies noted in Haryana, asserting that these problems have now begun to affect West Bengal and Assam. He demanded, “Let the total voter lists be thoroughly revised. The Election Commission should answer to the country why some mistakes occurred in the lists.”

In conclusion, the ongoing debate surrounding the accuracy of voter lists has garnered significant attention from the opposition, particularly from leaders such as Rahul Gandhi and Saugata Roy. Their calls for a discussion and thorough revision have highlighted widespread concerns regarding potential inaccuracies across several states, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability from the Election Commission ahead of the upcoming elections.
