MACBAN Calls for Investigation into Murder of Kwara Chairman Idrissu Abubakar

MACBAN has requested an investigation into the murder of their Kwara chairman, Idrissu Abubakar, who was shot outside his home on Saturday. The president of the association condemned the killing, marking it as the second assassination of a MACBAN leader this year. Ngelzarma highlighted the need for security agencies to address the escalating violence against the association’s members.

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has called for an investigation into the murder of their Kwara chapter chairman, Idrissu Abubakar. The association’s national president, Baba Ngelzarma, made this appeal following Mr. Abubakar’s tragic death, which the Kwara police confirmed on Sunday.

Idrissu Abubakar was shot by unidentified assailants outside his home in Oke Ose, Ilorin East LGA, around 10:00 p.m. on Saturday. Police investigations revealed five expended 7.62mm cartridges at the scene. Subsequently, the deceased’s remains were transferred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital mortuary.

Mr. Ngelzarma condemned the assassination of the young chairman, who was dedicated to fostering peace and progress among pastoralists in Nigeria. “Idrissu, aged 33, is the second MACBAN chairman to be killed this year,” he stated, recalling the earlier murder of Alhaji Sirajo Mairana, Katsina’s newly elected chairman. Abubakar leaves behind two wives, six children, and an elderly mother.

MACBAN’s president emphasized Mr. Abubakar’s commitment to transforming the nation’s livestock production system. Ngelzarma revealed that the assailants shot Mr. Abubakar shortly after he returned from Tarawee prayers and urged security agencies to investigate the alarming trend of violence against their leaders. He noted that over seven MACBAN chairmen have been murdered in the last two years.

Additionally, he mentioned the unresolved disappearance of MACBAN’s national vice-president, Alhaji Manir Lamido, who went missing in 2023 while traveling between Katsina and Kaduna states. Ngelzarma reassured that the association would strive to identify those responsible for this heinous act.

The murder of Idrissu Abubakar highlights the urgent need for enhanced security measures for leaders of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria. As the association mourns its young chairman, there is a pressing call for law enforcement to investigate these violent incidents, which have claimed numerous lives within the organization. The commitment to pursuing justice and safety for pastoralists remains paramount as the association confronts this persistent threat.
