Catholic Priest Fr. Livinus Maurice Released After Abduction in Nigeria

Fr. Livinus Maurice, a Catholic priest kidnapped in Nigeria on February 12, has been released following efforts by security forces. His abduction, alongside two others, prompted a plea for his unconditional release. Currently, another priest remains missing after being abducted on February 6.

On February 12, Fr. Livinus Maurice, a Catholic priest from St. Patrick’s Church in Isokpo, Rivers State, Nigeria, was kidnapped. He was abducted alongside two others by armed assailants while returning home after a hospital visit. In response to the incident, the Diocese of Port Harcourt issued a statement demanding his unconditional release from Bishop Bernadine Anaele.

Following concerted efforts from law enforcement and local security organizations, the priest and his companions were liberated on February 16. The state police spokesperson noted that their release resulted from sustained pressure from a collaborative security team, which included police, soldiers, and local officials. Investigations and operations targeting the kidnappers remain ongoing.

In an alarming development, another priest, Fr. Cornellus Manzak Damulak, was abducted on February 6 from his home in the Bwari Area Council of Abuja. As of now, he remains in captivity, raising concerns about ongoing security issues in the region.

Fr. Livinus Maurice was successfully freed from captivity due to coordinated efforts by security forces. His abduction highlights ongoing challenges concerning safety for clergy in Nigeria.
