The Tinubu administration plans to implement electric vehicle transportation in northeast Nigeria, having received approval for contracts worth nearly $100 million. This includes the supply of electric buses and tricycles and the establishment of charging infrastructure as part of the effort to reduce carbon emissions in the region.
The Tinubu administration in Nigeria is set to commence large-scale electric vehicle (EV) transportation in the northeast, following the Federal Executive Council’s recent approval. This landmark decision involves contracts totaling nearly $100 million (approx. N151.9 billion) aimed at supplying electric buses, tricycles, and establishing necessary charging infrastructure.
The contract involves the provision of ten 17-seater electric buses, to be supplied by Bluecrest Integrated Concept Limited for N2.9 billion within six months. Additionally, Mutual Commitment Company Limited is set to deliver 4000 e-tricycles at N49.6 billion over nine months, while Shanghai Integrated Infrastructure Development is contracted for 3000 tricycles at N37.2 billion. Sinoma Investment International Limited is also contracted to supply another 3000 e-tricycles, each capable of carrying nine passengers and a driver.
Furthermore, HNCEGC will supply 100 BYD Dolphin EVs, 100 BYD Qin Plus EVs, and 37 BYD Yuan Plus EVs for N16.3 billion. The establishment of charging points for e-buses and tricycles will be managed by KB Laman Motors Nigeria Limited, at the cost of N8.4 billion. The North East Development Commission is financing these contracts in efforts to lower carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency in the region.
President Bola Tinubu approved this procurement of electric vehicles in October of the previous year, following thorough inspections of vehicle samples, chargers, and batteries, indicating the administration’s commitment to sustainable transportation.
The approval of significant contracts for electric vehicles in northeast Nigeria is a pivotal step towards modernizing public transportation and advancing sustainability. With a structured plan to reduce carbon footprints through electric transportation, the Tinubu administration demonstrates its dedication to fostering a cleaner environment and promoting energy efficiency. This initiative, backed by substantial financial investments, represents a promising evolution in Nigeria’s transportation sector.
