Kenya Meteorological Department Warns of Heavy Rainfall and Weather Changes

The Kenya Meteorological Department warns of heavy rainfall expected across various regions from March 7 to 11, 2025. Isolated storms may occur, especially over the weekend, while certain counties will remain dry. High temperatures and strong winds have also been forecasted.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding a week of anticipated moderate to heavy rainfall across several regions in the country from March 7 to March 11, 2025. The advisory specified that areas likely to be affected include the highlands located both west and east of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, as well as the Central and Southern Rift Valley. Furthermore, isolated storms may occur, particularly over the weekend.

In addition to the previously mentioned regions, the Coastal Region, southeastern lowlands, northwest regions, and parts of the southern coast are also expected to experience rainfall. The meteorological department noted that while many parts of the country will initially enjoy hot, sunny, and dry conditions, rainfall is anticipated to begin over the weekend.

Counties within the eastern highlands, such as Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi, are predicted to receive moderate to heavy rainfall from Saturday through Tuesday. These areas will endure hot and sunny weather on Friday prior to the onset of rain.

Similarly, the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley counties, including Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and Nandi, are expected to encounter substantial rainfall from March 9 to March 12. Other counties, including Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot, will follow similar weather trends.

Contrarily, the North Eastern counties, comprised of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, are projected to remain dry and sunny throughout the weekend. Additionally, the department anticipated high temperatures exceeding 30°C in most of the country, except for the highlands east of the Rift Valley, where temperatures are expected to remain below 30°C. Noteworthy are the strong southeast winds forecasted to exceed 25 knots (12.9 m/s) in certain northwestern and northeastern areas of Kenya.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has alerted the public to expect moderate to heavy rainfall across several regions of the country from March 7 to March 11, 2025, with isolated storms possible over the weekend. While areas in the eastern highlands and Lake Victoria Basin will experience significant rainfall, the North Eastern region is anticipated to remain dry. Furthermore, elevated temperatures and strong winds are also expected, warranting attention for preparedness.
