The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecasted moderate to heavy rainfall across eight regions in Kenya from March 7-11, 2025, including the Rift Valley and Lake Victoria Basin. While some counties will see beneficial rains, the North Eastern region will remain dry. High temperatures and strong winds are also predicted.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding expected moderate to heavy rainfall across various regions of the country from March 7 to March 11, 2025. An advisory highlighted that areas such as the highlands to the east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Central and South Rift Valley will be significantly affected.
Additional areas forecasted for rainfall include the Coastal Region, southeastern lowlands, and northwestern parts, alongside portions of the southern coast. The department indicated that most regions will initially experience sunny, dry, and hot weather, which will transition to rains particularly over the weekend.
Counties in the highlands east, including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi, are predicted to experience moderate to heavy rainfall from Saturday through Tuesday. This will be preceded by hot and sunny conditions on Friday.
Similarly, regions within the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley, such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, and Nandi, are projected to receive heavy rainfall from Sunday until Tuesday. Other counties such as Nakuru, Narok, and Kericho will also be affected by these weather patterns.
Conversely, counties in the North Eastern region, including Marsabit, Mandera, and Wajir, are expected to remain dry and sunny throughout the weekend. The meteorological department has also cautioned that high temperatures exceeding 30°C will persist in most areas, except for the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, where temperatures will remain below that threshold.
In summary, Kenyans should prepare for a significant week of rainfall beginning March 7, 2025, affecting eight key regions including parts of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin. While some areas will experience beneficial rains, others, particularly in the North Eastern region, will remain dry. The forecasts suggest a crucial shift in temperature and weather patterns to be anticipated over the coming week.
