Germany Urges Syria to Curb Violence Amid Intensified Clashes

Germany’s Foreign Ministry has called on Syria to prevent further violence after over 200 people were killed in recent clashes. The violence stemmed from attacks by pro-Assad forces against transitional government security, prompting retaliatory actions. The new Syrian government emphasizes the need for unity and disarmament of armed groups to restore peace.

On March 8, 2025, Germany’s Foreign Ministry urged all factions in Syria to avert a deepening cycle of violence following intense clashes that resulted in over 200 fatalities within two days. Armed groups loyal to ousted President Bashar al-Assad attacked villages along the coast, targeting security forces. The German Foreign Ministry expressed shock at the bloodshed, advocating for peace, national unity, and inclusive dialogue to address the ongoing conflict.

The recent hostilities were ignited by a series of ambushes against transitional government security forces, leading to substantial casualties. Reports from the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights indicate that the fatalities included around 140 individuals from coastal villages, along with members of the governing forces and Assad’s loyal fighters. While the Syrian government has not confirmed casualty figures, authorities acknowledged retaliatory actions stemming from previous assaults on security personnel.

Defense Ministry spokesman Hassan Abdel Ghani reported progress by government forces, reclaiming areas in response to attacks. The head of Syria’s General Intelligence Service indicated involvement from former military leaders associated with Assad’s regime in orchestrating the violence. Meanwhile, Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa urged pro-Assad fighters, primarily from the Alawite minority, to disarm to prevent further escalation.

The ongoing skirmishes present the most severe conflict experienced since the Islamist insurgent group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham ousted Assad’s government in December. The newly established government claims to be committed to unifying Syria after extensive civil unrest that has caused devastating losses over the last 14 years.

In summary, Germany has called upon all parties involved in the Syrian conflict to halt the violence following overwhelming fatalities during recent clashes. The need for peaceful negotiations and unity is emphasized amidst ongoing disputes, with significant casualties reported. Additionally, the interim president’s appeal for disarmament of pro-Assad forces highlights an urgent desire for stability in a region plagued by civil unrest.
