The explosion was caused when a tanker truck transporting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost control on a poorly maintained road, leading to the spillage of its hazardous contents into a nearby stream. This incident occurred while local farmers were tending to their rice fields. The spilled fuel ignited, resulting in a catastrophic fire that eventually led to a massive explosion of the tanker itself.
Mr. Hussaini described the devastating impact, stating that “The inferno engulfed the farmland, destroying the entire rice field, including fruits and vegetation.” By the time the report was made, the tragic toll stood at seven fatalities, with one individual injured. The victims have been identified as Rafiatu Sahabi, Ramlat Shehu, Rashida Abdullahi Raliya, Abdulrahaman, Zainab Ahmed, Zuwaira Idrisu, and Maryam A. Nura.
NSEMA reported that Maimuna Isah, who was also working in the fields, sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment at Saho Rami Primary Health Care. The repercussions of the incident extend beyond human loss, severely affecting local agricultural productivity and the community’s livelihood.
