Dr. Opoku-Antwi, owner of the Spintex Knights, believes that with adequate funding and investment, Ghana can develop a strong national basketball team, leveraging local talent before incorporating players from abroad. He highlights the team’s competitive edge against other African teams, particularly Nigeria.
Dr. Opoku-Antwi, the owner of Spintex Knights, asserts that Ghana possesses the talent necessary to cultivate a competitive basketball national team. He emphasizes that establishing such a team will demand time and financial investment. With adequate support, he is optimistic that Ghana can emerge as an essential force in African basketball.
In an interview with Sports Check on GhanaWeb TV, Dr. Opoku-Antwi noted that the Spintex Knights have frequently competed effectively against elite teams from other African nations. He believes that when Ghana’s top athletes are combined, they have the potential to create one of the continent’s strongest teams.
He remarked, “We can start gradually if there’s funding. We can even begin with local players because when we travel to Nigeria, we beat all their teams. Spintex Knights don’t have all the best players in Ghana, so imagine if we put all the top players together to compete against Nigeria, we would demolish them.”
Dr. Opoku-Antwi also stressed the significance of a phased development strategy, starting with local talent before integrating international players. He stated, “I believe we can start with a local national team and build from there because, at the top level, we will need to bring in some of our players from abroad to compete.”
Dr. Opoku-Antwi emphasizes the importance of funding and gradual development in building a successful basketball team in Ghana. By leveraging local talent and eventually integrating international players, he believes Ghana can form a competitive national team capable of challenging prominent African counterparts. With time and investment, Ghana’s basketball prospects are promising.
