A recent cross-border operation from February 27 to March 2 aimed to combat crime along the shared borders of the Republic of South Africa (RSA) and Namibia. Conducted by a collaboration of entities, including the South African Police Service, Customs, the Cross-Border Road Transport Agency, and the Border Management Authority, this initiative achieved notable results in maintaining public safety.

According to Provincial Police spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, the operation included various proactive measures such as search and seizure activities, vehicle checkpoints, and extensive border patrols. These efforts led to the inspection of 1,065 vehicles and 1,489 individuals, resulting in three arrests linked to illegal drugs and undocumented foreign nationals.

Significant confiscations included Mandrax valued at approximately R4,525, as well as cash believed to be intended for criminal activities. The operations also yielded the seizure of fish nets, fishing traps, illicit cigarettes valued at R150,156, and tobacco products worth about R2,000. Furthermore, traffic violations resulted in the issuance of fines totaling R14,600.

Colonel Ehlers emphasized the importance of continuous operations between the RSA and its neighboring countries to enhance safety and security along the borders. He urged citizens to report criminal activities via the MySAPS app or by calling 08600-10111. Additionally, individuals facing extortion should contact the National Extortion Hotline at 0800-911-011, ensuring a vigilant community response against crime.

In summary, the cross-border operation between the Republic of South Africa and Namibia has resulted in significant successes, including multiple arrests and the confiscation of illegal items. Continued efforts will be implemented to ensure security in border regions while encouraging public engagement in reporting criminal activities.
