On Monday, a group of women known as Concerned Market Women organized a peaceful protest in Benin City to denounce the tragic murder of 38-year-old Success Izekor, who was four months pregnant. Success was allegedly killed by her husband, Kelvin Izekor, at their residence on Upper Mission Road on February 22, 2025. The demonstration highlighted the growing concern surrounding domestic violence against women, with protesters carrying placards bearing various messages.
Odion Asemota, speaking on behalf of the protesters, called upon the government to ensure justice for Success Izekor. Reports indicate that although her husband is currently facing trial, there are claims that his mother is already asserting he will be acquitted due to mental illness. Asemota stressed the gravity of the situation, noting the relationship duration, which only began in June of last year, prior to this horrific act.
Following the murder, Kelvin Izekor reportedly tried to dispose of his wife’s body and later visited her store to take money related to her Point of Sale (POS) business. The incident was confirmed by the Edo State Police Command, who found Success’s lifeless body with deep wounds. Police spokesperson Moses Yamu stated that officers had to intervene to protect Kelvin from a potentially violent mob.
Edo State’s Commissioner of Police, Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimenyin, has condemned the rise in domestic violence and assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to bring the responsible party to justice.
