The Racing Association of Maldives has secured membership with the FIA, allowing access to resources for promoting motorsports in the Maldives. This membership will enable RAM to participate in development programs and enhance local competitions. RAM continues to engage with local authorities to improve road safety and foster athlete training despite previous setbacks in their championship events.
The Racing Association of Maldives (RAM) has officially joined the International Automobile Federation (FIA), as confirmed by a vote during the FIA Annual General Meeting in Rwanda on December 13 of last year. This milestone represents a significant achievement for RAM, enhancing its ability to cultivate motorsport within the Maldives.
The President of RAM, Mr. Mohamed Shamih, expressed that FIA membership presents numerous opportunities to elevate motor sports in the nation. The association will now have access to essential resources and expertise, enabling them to operate under internationally recognized standards, while they look to enhance local competition safeguards.
Additionally, RAM is poised to engage in FIA development programs, participate in international events, and construct vital sporting infrastructure, including training centers intended to minimize environmental impact. Furthermore, RAM plans to collaborate with local authorities to raise awareness regarding road safety and to provide training opportunities for aspiring motorsport athletes across the country.
Since its establishment in 2018, RAM has successfully conducted multiple tournaments with substantial support from the community. However, the association faced challenges when the police halted its 2024 RAAS Championship last December, citing competition restrictions. Despite these hurdles, RAM clubs and athletes continue to compete on a global scale, recently making it to the semi-finals of the Drag Wars event in Sri Lanka.
In summary, the Racing Association of Maldives now enjoys FIA membership, providing them with new resources and opportunities to foster motorsport in the region. Through this affiliation, RAM aims to improve competitive standards, promote road safety, and develop necessary sports infrastructure. Despite past challenges, RAM remains committed to advancing motorsport within the Maldives and achieving recognition on international platforms.
