Indian Coast Guard Ship Sachet Departs for Sudan with Essential Medical Supplies

The Indian Coast Guard Ship Sachet has departed for Sudan carrying over two tons of life-saving medicines, including anti-cancer drugs. This mission highlights India’s commitment to humanitarian assistance, particularly in response to severe crises in Sudan and other regions. The ship had previously delivered medical aid to Djibouti and has participated in similar efforts in Honduras and Iraq recently.

On March 1, 2025, the Indian Coast Guard Ship Sachet set sail for Sudan with over two tons of essential life-saving medicines, which notably include anti-cancer medications. This initiative is part of India’s ongoing efforts to extend humanitarian assistance to nations facing significant crises.

Additionally, the Indian Coast Guard Ship Sachet previously departed for Djibouti, delivering medical supplies that include 20 haemodialysis machines and one reverse osmosis plant. These efforts are reflective of India’s commitment to supporting the Global South in times of need.

The current conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has resulted in severe humanitarian challenges, with over 25 million people affected in Sudan, South Sudan, and Chad. The World Food Programme has warned that the ongoing war threatens to create the world’s largest hunger crisis, with approximately 17 million individuals facing food insecurity in Sudan.

In recent months, India has also provided humanitarian aid to Honduras, dispatching 26 tons of essential medical supplies and disaster relief materials following Tropical Storm SARA. Furthermore, in late January, India sent aid to the Kurdistan region of Iraq, which included bronchodilators, inhalers, and ventilators to support the local population.

India has a longstanding history of offering humanitarian assistance globally, having previously committed significant resources to assist nations in distress, including dedicating USD 20 million to Iraq in response to a UN appeal in 2003.

The Indian Coast Guard Ship Sachet’s mission underscores India’s commitment to humanitarian assistance by providing vital medicines to Sudan amidst an ongoing crisis. This follows India’s broader support framework, which has included aid to both Honduras and Iraq in recent months. These actions demonstrate India’s dedication to fostering solidarity with nations in need and addressing significant humanitarian challenges.
