A tragic incident occurred along the Kasba border in Brahmanbaria, where a 32-year-old Bangladeshi youth, identified as Al-Amin, was shot and killed by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF). The shooting transpired around 7:30 PM on a Friday evening, as Al-Amin was part of a group near the border when BSF personnel opened fire, reportedly using rubber bullets. After sustaining injuries, he was taken into custody by the BSF and died while receiving medical treatment around 9:00 PM. Currently, his body remains at the BSF camp.
The Chairman of the Bayek Union Parishad, Billal Hossain, verified the occurrence but emphasized that the details surrounding the shooting remained ambiguous. Attempts to contact Al-Amin’s family have been futile as their area lacks mobile network coverage. Notably, Dakshin Putiya is often cited as a hotspot for smuggling activities, and it has been alleged that Al-Amin was involved in sugar smuggling.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Samiul Islam, addressed the media stating that the BSF fired at Al-Amin under the suspicion of him being a smuggler. Following the shooting, he was transported to the BSF camp for treatment but unfortunately passed away from his injuries later that night. The local authorities have communicated the matter to the BSF through the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and a flag meeting is scheduled to take place between the BGB and BSF to discuss the incident and arrange for the transfer of Al-Amin’s body.
Residents of the area have expressed concern, recalling previous instances where two youths were fatally shot on November 25 of the previous year, and another incident occurred on April 22. These events highlight ongoing tensions and violence along the border area, raising questions about safety and enforcement practices.
