The INAM predicts the formation of two tropical cyclones, ‘Honde’ and ‘Garance’. Honde is nearing Inhambane province and may bring strong winds and rain, while Garance is moving east and poses no threat to Mozambique. The public is advised to take precautions, particularly for maritime navigation.
The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) of Mozambique forecasts the formation of two tropical cyclones, named ‘Honde’ and ‘Garance’, expected between Thursday and Friday near Madagascar. Tropical Storm Honde is currently situated 250 km offshore from Inhambane province and is progressing towards the south of Madagascar. It is anticipated to strengthen into a tropical cyclone on Friday, generating strong winds in the Mozambique Channel and moderate to heavy rainfall in parts of Mozambique.
Despite the storm being situated at sea, meteorologist Lelo Tayob noted that its substantial presence influences atmospheric circulation, thereby producing rainfall on land. “This system is not in our country, it is at sea, in the Mozambique Channel. However, it is large and impacts the general circulation of the atmosphere, and this generates rain,” he stated.
Tropical Storm Garance, also noted for its potential development into a tropical cyclone, is moving eastwards away from Madagascar. Tayob assured, “Tomorrow, [Tropical Storm Garance] will evolve into a tropical cyclone, but given its size, location, and movement, which is far from Madagascar, it will not have an impact on the continental part of our country.”
INAM has advised the public to maintain safety measures in anticipation of potential adverse weather, particularly for maritime navigation, as these tropical systems develop.
In summary, the INAM has issued warnings regarding the potential formation of tropical cyclones ‘Honde’ and ‘Garance’, with ‘Honde’ posing a direct impact due to its proximity to the Mozambique Channel. While Garance is expected to develop, it is not projected to affect Mozambique significantly. Authorities stress the importance of preparedness, especially for maritime activities.
