Kenya Meteorological Department Forecasts Rainfall Expected by March 2023

The Kenya Meteorological Department forecasts the onset of rainfall from the third week of March, expected to last until late July. Farmers are advised to prepare for planting amidst concerns over unusual dry conditions. Temperatures in the interim are projected to exceed 30°C, necessitating caution among residents regarding the extreme weather.

In light of the current sunny and dry weather conditions in Kenya, the Kenya Meteorological Department has forecasted expected rainfall within the next three weeks. A meteorologist from the department disclosed on Thursday, February 27, that precipitation is anticipated to commence in various regions from the third week of March.

As per the expert’s assessment, the rainfall is projected to be substantial, expected to persist over five months, from mid-March to late July this year. Farmers are encouraged to initiate early preparations for planting by tilling their land in anticipation of the forthcoming rains.

Pressing further, the meteorologist advised that farmers engaged in dry planting should proceed during the first and second weeks of March, as rain is expected to materialize in the third week of March. Moreover, heavy rainfall is anticipated to occur particularly within the months of March and April, tapering off by July.

This report arises amidst growing concern among farmers regarding the delayed onset of rainfall, leading some to contemplate halting their agricultural practices this season. Farmers have expressed discontent over the prolonged dry spell, which deviates from the usual pattern of intermittent rains at the year’s start.

One farmer remarked, “Every farmer is now ready for the planting season. However, the weather has been unusually severe for an extended period, and it seems there is a change in the climate this year.” Additionally, the Kenya Meteorological Department has issued warnings about excessively hot and dry conditions in the upcoming week.

The department’s latest weather advisory cautioned residents to prepare for high temperatures exceeding 30°C from February 25 to March 3, with specific regions such as Central Kenya, the Rift Valley, and the South-eastern lowlands standing out. Nighttime temperatures in certain areas, including parts of Central Kenya and approximately Mount Kilimanjaro, may dip below 10°C.

In summary, Kenya is set to experience anticipated rainfall from mid-March to late July, as communicated by the Kenya Meteorological Department. Farmers are advised to prepare diligently for planting activities ahead of the rains. This forecast follows a period of unusual dry weather, prompting concern among agricultural stakeholders about the changing climatic conditions. The public is also urged to remain vigilant of the ongoing hot conditions, as temperatures are expected to rise substantially in the coming days.
