NiDCOM’s Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa has called for a thorough investigation into the suspicious death of Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian footballer in Uganda. Lawal’s death was initially attributed to an accident, but further reports suggest he fell from a mall balcony. The Nigerian Embassy is working closely with Ugandan authorities to ensure transparency and justice in this case.
The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has expressed concern over the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Abubakar Lawal, a former Nigerian junior international and player for Uganda’s Vipers SC. NiDCOM intends to demand a comprehensive investigation into this tragic event, as reported by The PUNCH.
Lawal’s passing was announced by his club and the Ugandan Police, who initially indicated that he had been involved in a motorcycle accident. However, later police statements suggested that he had fallen from the balcony of a shopping mall in Kampala, where preliminary reports noted that he had arrived in his vehicle to meet a friend.
According to a police statement, Lawal was with Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national, at a shopping mall where he had reportedly prepared tea prior to his fall at approximately 8:00 AM. Despite being rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival, raising questions about the circumstances leading to his demise.
In light of the tragic news, including appeals from Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa, who was also Lawal’s teammate, Dabiri-Erewa has assured that NiDCOM is actively addressing the situation. She noted the conflicting reports regarding Lawal’s death indicate potential foul play requiring further examination.
Ambassador Shama Shanga, representing the Nigerian Embassy in Uganda, has been in communication with the relevant local authorities to demand a thorough investigation into the matter. In response to these developments, Dabiri-Erewa expressed deep concern and emphasized the necessity for transparency and accountability in the investigation process, asserting that there must be no cover-up regarding Lawal’s untimely death.
Lawal, aged 29, began his career in Nigeria with Wikki Tourists before transferring to Nasarawa United in 2019. He later joined As Kigali in 2020 and moved to Uganda, signing with Vipers SC after two successful years in Rwanda.
The tragic death of Abubakar Lawal has raised numerous questions regarding the events leading to his passing. NiDCOM’s commitment to demanding a thorough investigation underscores the seriousness of the situation. The conflicting reports surrounding Lawal’s death have prompted calls for accountability, collaboration between Nigerian and Ugandan authorities, and a transparent inquiry to ensure justice is served.
